Club Updates: 02/02/20

Some decent weather for once allowed us to get in some quality cycles over the weekend. We had decent numbers out and there was good banter on the bikes. The quality of the cycling in the racing group is excellent at the moment with the lads training hard and looking forward to a big season of racing. We would expect decent numbers at the races this year. When club members are targeting big things it is a wise move to jump onboard with them and see where it takes you. In other news we have finalised the dates for our last two Winter Warriors, and it was a big weekend for Shane Scully at the Guardian Sports Awards.

Training

  • Monday: Circuit Training with Bertie – GAA complex at 7:00pm
  • Mid-week turbos: sessions are arranged through Viber.
  • Thursday: running speed set with the Tri Club at 7:00pm at Nenagh College.
  • Saturday: main club cycle – 9:00 at the Hotel.
  • Sunday: long distance club cycle – 8:00 at Tescos.
  • Run sessions: early morning 6:00am, Mon, Wed, Fri from the library.

Challenge CC – 90km cycle: we hope that any lads who plan on racing for the club in the year might try to target this pre-season lung buster. Throw this ride in with the two winter warrior rides and you should be in good nick for the start of the season. There are already 6 lads confirmed as going up to Galway for it. Date: Sunday, February 23rd.

Run Group: things have been reasonably quiet in the run group of late with only a few focusing on the cross country season. Numbers are picking up again in the mornings so we will no doubt see some new target races being chosen. There are a few heading for the Mallow 10 Miler but I would guess that the Dublin Marathon might be the big goal this year. Eoin Woolley was racing once again in the Milford Hospice 10km where he ran 37 minutes for the distnace. It’s great to lads out every week at the Parkruns in the area with Eoin in Portumna, David and Bucks in Borrisokane and Will K in Cloughjordan.

Viber: if you plan on cycling with us for the year then make sure to add yourself to our Viber account. Our Viber account is very much targeted at current active members. If you don’t plan on cycling with us then I am sure you don’t want us annoying you with messages so just take your name off the list. Pop it back on if you ever plan on coming out with us again. Simple! We will be tidying up our Viber list later this week. If your name is removed by mistake then just send a message and we will pop you back on.

Nenagh Guardian Sports Awards: Shane Scully had the tux on for the sports awards last Friday in the Abbey Court Hotel. He was there to pick up the award for Guardian December Sports Star of the Month. It’s great to Nenagh CC represented at these awards for the first time. We will have to wait until the Guardian is published on Wednesday for some embarrassing photos from the night!

Winter Warrior 3 & 4 – Dates

  • WW3 – Saturday, February 15th
  • WW4 – Saturday, February 29th

Weekend Training: You know the winter hasn’t gone well when it feels unusual to be out on the road on Saturday and Sunday. Judging by how tired I am now typing out this, it feels like our fitness needs some work. The recovery rate just isn’t where it needs to be. How can we do a Rás if we can’t even manage two days! The routes this week were both close to home in case we got hit by bad showers. Thankfully this didn’t happen. The chat in the group was very much about the looming racing season and our plans for that. The conclusion being, take it one week at a time, see how the form is and if we feel fit enough and good enough then sign up for the big one.
